Mauna - Practice

Mauna - Silence

Maunena kalaham nasti, maunena vyadhim nasti ...

"... maunena sakalam siddhyate, maunam saccidananda sukham."

By the means of silence there is no quarrel, by the means of silence there is no disease. By the means of silence fulfilment can be reached. Silence is the joy of the happiness in the state of conciousness/awareness of being.

Sri Swamiji has been propagating the practice of silence, of Mauna, for many years. He gave the first Mauna retreat in 2013 in Flüeli Ranft, Switzerland. This was followed by another one in Bad Meinberg in Germany in 2014, followed by two more in Switzerland in 2016 and 2019. In the same year, he held another silence retreat in the Ashram in Mysore with 500 participants.

After having travelled worldwide and teaching Kriya Yoga as well as Vedanta-philosophy for many years, he additionally chose the path of silence to help spiritual aspirants to proceed further on their journey to the Self. He would sit throughout the sessions of silence and support the participants in their inner process of silencing the mind. He gave some simple instructions like:

During His Mauna seminars Sri Swamiji recommends concentrating on the breath, breathing in and breathing out. One can focus on the sound of the breath, or on the movement of breath in the body. The only thought permitted in this process, is the silent, inner chanting of OM. All other thoughts must be ignored and not followed. The mind is repeatedly brought back to focus on this process of concentrating on the breath.

Sri Swamiji said on 17.08.2013, during the Mauna seminar in Flüeli Ranft: "Silence (Mauna) is a big topic. Silence is powerful when you stop thinking. At the beginning it is very difficult to stop our thoughts. We can control and stop our speech, but not our thoughts. When you begin to practice silence, thoughts will come, one after the other. It doesn't matter. They will come during the initial days. If you continue to practice, the thoughts will stop. This is pure Mauna".

The practice of Mauna and inner silence supports the process of becoming more conscious. The mind is asked to analyse whether or not thoughts are permitted to appear, and if so, which thoughts may come. The process of becoming more conscious is like filtration, filtering out everything that is not part of the practice.
